Belzona 1814

An abrasion-resistant epoxy material engineered to protect metal substrates and formulated for application over large areas.
Description

Belzona 1814 is an abrasion-resistant epoxy paste for the protection of surfaces subject to abrasive attack, especially for large applications. This epoxy repair composite will adhere to a wide range of substrates, even rigid surfaces such as steel and cast iron—providing a seamless and durable lining. The product can withstand temperatures of 70°C (158°F).

Supplied as a 3-part system, the material is easy to mix and benefits from an extended working life making it ideal for large areas. No specialist tools are necessary during an application, and it is possible to apply thin and thick sections during one operation.

Belzona 1814 abrasion-resistant epoxy – belongs to the Abrasion Resistant Metals – Belzona products included on the Series 1000.

  • High abrasion and wear resistance
  • Will repair corroded metal
  • Solvent-free allowing it to be applied safely in confined areas
  • Excellent bonding to many metal surfaces including steel and cast iron
  • Application and cure at room temperature – no hot work involved
  • Long working life
  • High mechanical strength
  • Protection of hydrocyclones and grinding mills

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

To ensure an effective molecular weld, only apply the epoxy paste, Belzona 1814, to clean, firm, dry, and well-roughened surfaces. To achieve this, firstly clear away any loose contamination and use Belzona 9111 (Cleaner/Degreaser) to clean and degrease the surface. Following this, roughen the surface by blast cleaning, deeply scoring, or grinding. Degrease the surface again, allowing the surface to dry before combining the reactive components. To do this, empty the contents of the Solidifier into the Base unit and mix thoroughly using a paddle mixer to achieve a uniform consistency free of any streakiness. Alternatively, empty the entire contents of the Base and Solidifier into a mechanical mixer drum and mix thoroughly to achieve a uniform material free of any streakiness. After, gradually add the contents of the aggregate into the mixer drum. Allow the mixer to run until a homogenous consistency is achieved. Next, apply the Belzona 1814 directly onto the prepared surface with a plastic applicator provided or an appropriate tool at the recommended thickness. Finally, mixing tools should be cleaned immediately after use with Belzona 9111 or any other effective solvent e.g., Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK). For more information, read the Instructions for Use (IFU):  Belzona 1814
The cure time for the epoxy material, Belzona 1814 varies depending on the ambient conditions and will be reduced for thicker sections and extended for thinner sections. The cure time is as follows:
Temperature Movement or use involving no loading Light loading Full mechanical or thermal loading
50°F/ 10°C 32 hours 5 days 14 days
68°F/ 20°C 12 hours 24 hours 7 days
86°F/ 30°C 10 hours 16 hours 4 days
104°F/ 40°C 6 hours 12 hours 2 days
These times are for a thickness of approximately 0.25 in/ 6mm. Post-cure is possible if desired for a quicker return to service. Belzona 1814 should be allowed to cure unaided between 16-24 hours prior o post-cure. Afterward, the product can be post-cured at a temperature between 122°F/ 50°C and 212°F/ 100°C for 1-2 hours. Overcoating is possible and should be applied as soon as possible after the first layer in less than 24 hours. For more information, see the Instructions for Use (IFU): Belzona 1814
The abrasion-resistant material, Belzona 1814 repairs and protects metal by taking advantage of is ceramic aggregates which create a barrier from a variety of chemicals and abrasive materials, protecting the substrate underneath.
